Beginners Guide to Using Airbrush for F/X Applications
Featuring Rj’s SHADOW brush: Materials fee-depends on participants – 1 hour
Rj will showcase his signature airbrush by Paasche each attendee will receive a Shadow airbrush as part of admission. Rj will showcase how to pre-paint appliances and skins for puppets with the airbrush and will go through a complete breakdown with cleaning and maintenance. This class really takes the intimidation out of buying and using an airbrush! and you get a great airbrush as part of attending!
Bondo Transfer Appliance Make Up:
Material fee: $100 -1 hour-1.5 hours
Rj will demonstrate the creation and application of a bondo make up appliance Which are all the rage in Hollywood, right now. Used for old age character make ups as seen in THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON and very extensively on THE WALKING DEAD. This is an affordable and FUN new technique that every artist needs in his/her repertoire.
Out of Kit/Moulage Injury Sim
Applications: Materials fee + $100 – 1 hour
Using only supplies in the common make up artists kit Rj will walk attendees through the process of creating realistic scars Cuts Burns bruises and other FX injury simulations. He will go over old school materials and new advances in products that every make up artist “worth their salt” should have in his or her kit. Latex allergies should not attend.
Foam Prosthetic Application
Materials Fee +$100 -2.5 hours
Using a pre made foam appliance Rj will demonstrate how to apply and paint a foam appliance to add some punch to your next cosplay, Halloween costume, Haunt, or production of your own.
Silicone Gel Filled Prosthetic Application
Materials Fee+ $175- 2.5 hours
Using a pre made silicone appliance Rj will demonstrate how to apply and paint a creature in front of your eyes. He will also go over the major differences between silicone and Foam and other appliance materials. Come see this state of the art FX innovation in action, and why FX artists all over the world are crazy about silicone.
Creating Your Own Gelatin Appliances
Materials Fee+$100- 1.5 hour
Rj calls this the poor mans silicone. Rj will take the attendee through the creation and usage of a gelatin prosthetic and where and when gelatin is a good substance for appliances.

Rj will illustrate how to use foam for costuming and puppetry purposes. Which foams to use, how to use them , how to glue and paint them. Very popular with cosplayers. This seminar can be tailored to solely Puppet builds or solely foam costume/armor construction or a mix of both depending on what the promoter wants to offer his/her attendees.

Rj will take attendees through the various sculpting mediums that FX artists use, Oil base clay, Water based clay, polymer clays and a general overview of how they are all utilized to created monsters and appliance character make ups.

Maquettes: miniature sculptures of creatures used for animation or production purposes to see what the full sized creature will look like upon completion. A prime example of an effects artists talents and a crucial part in the planning stages of creating full sized monsters. In this demo Rj will showcase Maquette’s and how/why they are created for films … using two different clays WED and SUPER SCULPY.
Facial Appliance Sculpture
Materials fee: $75 -1 hour
This sculpture class will show the attendee how to avoid the pratfalls and obstacles in creating an appliance make up that demolds quickly and easily and safely. Also how to create a great prosthetic appliance from your sculpt. Utilizing one or more types of clay Rj will start a sculpture on a facial cast and explain the process through to the end.
Molding Your Appliance Make Up
Materials fee:$75 – 1.5 hours
Rj will demonstrate to attendees how to mold the prosthetic sculpt in Ultra Cal 30 stone and additionally go over some other molding materials, how to prep a mold for your medium and what to do with it when its done.
Cable Controls in Your Puppet/Mask
Materials fee: $150 – 1 hour
Rj will demonstrate basic cable controls for your mask/puppet applications raging to manual pulled cables all the way to advanced servo motor controls. leading into animatronic Puppetry.
Animatronic Puppetry Applications
Materials fee $150 – 1 hour
Rj will demonstrate the creation of a remote controlled hand mechanism for your attendees and walk them through the steps and materials needed to create one of their own.
Building Large Body Puppets:
Materials fee: $175 -1.5 hrs
Rj Will demonstrate the creation of carnival style/ back pack body puppets and how you can create your own for less than $175 make a real splash at Halloween, in a Parade, or at your haunted house with one of these guys.
